THANKS TO PIZZAMAKERS OF THE WORLD
On October 25, 2000, the Holy Father thanked 2,000 pizza-makers gathered from around the pie, or rather, the globe. They came from countries as scattered as Japan, the United States, Spain, Australia, and host Italy. In his weekly general audience, the Pope honored the chefs in front of 50,000 people in St. Peter’s Square.
“We appreciate so much your professional work, ” said the Holy Father on the occasion of World Pizzamakers Day. “I pray for your families and your particular profession.”
The pizzamakers prepared a special yellow pepper and buffalo mozarella pizza in the colors of the Vatican flag, reported Reuters. They gave the Pontiff traditional plates and an antique pizza oven. They also distributed 50,000 slices to the people gathered in the area.
The audience likely didn’t eat this unleavened bread in haste.
